Sabha

One day is enough to see the old town and citadel; use it as a base for the Ubari sand seas and Ghat, not a destination on its own.

Sabha is the main city of southern Libya and the historic capital of the Fezzan region. It has a small old town, a gold souk and a hilltop citadel, but the real draw is the surrounding desert — the Ubari lakes and the Tadrart Acacus rock art. Most travellers stop for one night before heading south or west.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.

Watch out

Safety

Sabha is relatively calm compared to other Libyan cities, but the security situation can change quickly. Gunshots at weddings are common and not a sign of danger. Always check your government travel advice and arrange local contacts before arriving.
  • Gunshots may be heard at weddings — not a security incident.
  • Cash only: no ATMs or card payments for visitors.
  • The citadel is closed to visitors; view it from the hill opposite the airport.
  • Check your government travel advice before planning a trip.
