Sabaragamuwa sits between Colombo and the hill country, so it works as a 2-night stop on the road to Kandy or Ella rather than a destination on its own. Ratnapura is the gem town and the gateway to Adam's Peak; Kitulgala is the white-water and rainforest stop. Trains barely reach the province — plan on bus or a hired car.

- Adam's Peak is a steep, cold, 4–6 hour round trip on steps; start before midnight and carry a layer.
- Gem 'mine tours' and shop sales are commission-driven — agree the price and the tour length before you go.
- The Ratnapura area is one of the wettest in Sri Lanka; expect rain in most months.
