RugbyRugby, North Dakota
Stop for 2–4 hours off the Empire Builder or US 2, not a night: the cairn, a walk downtown, one meal. Sleep in Minot or Devils Lake instead.
Rugby is a town of about 2,900 people on US Highway 2, roughly halfway between Minot and Devils Lake, and it calls itself the Geographical Center of North America. The marker cairn sits at the US 2 and ND 3 junction; the surveyed centre is about 6 miles west near Balta. There is no public transport, no taxi and no car rental in town, so a stop works only if you arrive by car or accept the walk from the Amtrak platform. Treat it as a half-day leg-breaker on a US 2 crossing or a rail stop, not a base.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
By car, or on foot. There is no public transport, taxi or car rental in Rugby. Downtown sits about 2 mi north of the US 2 strip, so arriving by train means a long walk or a lift for anything on the highway. Most travellers drive US 2 or ND 3 and park on the street.

Watch out
Safety
- No taxi, no rideshare guarantee, no car rental in town: arrange a lift or plan to walk.
- Amtrak calls at unsociable hours — eastbound around 7am, westbound around 11pm — and the platform is unstaffed.
- Winter brings snow, ice and severe wind chill; US 2 and ND 3 can close in storms.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the rural stretches between towns.
