How to get from Dublin to Galway

Two realistic choices: coach or train. Both run city centre to city centre, so neither needs a taxi at either end. Coaches are usually cheaper and some serve Dublin Airport; trains are roomier and leave from Heuston, west of the city centre.

Driving is an option if you are heading on to Connemara, the Burren or the Aran Islands ferry ports, where a car saves time. Parking in Galway city is limited and paid.

Book coaches and trains on the operator's own site or app. Advance fares are cheaper and seat reservations are included on most intercity trains. At busy times, walk-up tickets can cost more or sell out.

For coaches from Dublin Airport, allow extra time at the stop: airport pickups can be delayed by traffic on the M50 and M6 approaches.

Galway is small and walkable, so you do not need a car in the city. Use it as a base for day trips to Connemara and the Aran Islands, which are easier with a tour or a rental car.

If you are continuing west or south, buses from Galway reach Clifden, Doolin and the Aran Islands ferry ports, but services are less frequent than the Dublin route.

The route runs west from Dublin across the midlands, past Athlone on the River Shannon, then into County Galway. The train and the M6 motorway follow a similar corridor, so timings are close.

Galway Ceannt station and the main coach stops are both on the east side of the city centre, a short walk from Eyre Square.
