How to get from Athens to Santorini

Flying is the fastest option. Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) to Santorini (JTR) takes about 45–60 minutes in the air, plus airport time at both ends; the flight is usually the better choice if you have only a few days or are connecting from an international arrival. Fares vary widely by date, so compare before you commit (2026 estimate).

The cheapest option is a conventional (slow) ferry from Piraeus. It takes about 5–8 hours depending on the vessel and stops, and costs less than a fast ferry or a flight. Fast ferries cut the crossing but cost more. In rough weather, fast ferries are more likely to be cancelled or delayed than conventional ones.

If you are already in Athens, Piraeus is the main ferry port and is reachable by metro and bus; allow extra time on strike days and in peak summer traffic.

Ferries leave mainly from Piraeus, with some seasonal sailings from Rafina and Lavrio. Santorini's ferry port is Athinios, below Fira; buses and taxis meet most arrivals, and the drive up to Fira takes about 10–15 minutes.

Flights land at Santorini (JTR) near Kamari, about 15–20 minutes by road to Fira. In peak season, allow extra time for baggage and transfers.

Which to choose: take the flight if time is short or you are arriving on a long-haul flight; take the ferry if you want the cheapest fare, are not rushed, or prefer to arrive by sea. For a first trip, a morning ferry or a midday flight both work well.

Book ferries through the operator's official site or a reputable booking platform; you will usually get an e-ticket to show at the gate. For flights, book directly with the airline or a major comparison site. In summer, fast ferries and popular flight times sell out, so book weeks ahead if your dates are fixed.

Check the port and arrival times carefully: some ferries stop at other islands first, so the total crossing can be longer than the headline time. Keep a buffer before an international flight home.

Travel light on ferry days; port transfers are easier with one bag. Arrive at Piraeus at least 30–60 minutes before departure in summer.

Santorini is busiest in July and August; May–June and late September–October are calmer and often cheaper.

If you are island-hopping, ferries between the Cyclades can be booked as separate legs; check whether your route passes through Naxos, Paros or Ios, which can change the total time.

Keep a printed or offline copy of your tickets in case of poor signal at the port.
