Rome airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Two airports serve Rome. Fiumicino (FCO) handles most long-haul and full-service flights and sits about 30 km southwest of the centre. Ciampino (CIA) is the low-cost base, closer in but with fewer transport choices. The decision is simple: train if you are going to Termini or the historic centre and travelling light; fixed-fare taxi if you have bags, are three or more, or arrive after midnight; shuttle bus if the price matters more than the time.

The Leonardo Express is the non-stop airport train to Roma Termini, roughly every 15 minutes for most of the day and about every 30 minutes early and late. It is the fastest way into the centre and the only train option that lands you at Termini itself. Buy at the station machines, the app or the counter; validate paper tickets before boarding or risk a fine.

The FL1 regional train is cheaper but stops at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina rather than Termini. It is the better choice if your hotel is in Trastevere, near Ostiense, or if you are connecting to a train from Tiburtina. It runs more often and accepts ordinary regional tickets.

Ciampino has no train station of its own. The nearest rail link is Ciampino station on the Rome–Frascati line, reached by local bus, then a regional train to Termini. Most travellers find the direct shuttle bus simpler.

Several shuttle companies run between Fiumicino and Roma Termini, with some services continuing to Tiburtina. They are the cheapest fixed option and run through the night on the main routes, which makes them useful for very early flights. Journey times depend on traffic and can stretch past an hour at peak times.

From Ciampino, shuttle buses to Termini are the standard budget transfer and also run late. Local buses connect Ciampino airport to Ciampino station and to the Anagnina metro terminus, where you can pick up metro line A into the centre; this is the cheapest route but involves changes with luggage.

Rome sets fixed fares between the airports and the city centre, which removes the meter argument. The fixed fare applies to the area inside the old city walls, not to every address in greater Rome, so confirm the price before you get in if your hotel is outside that zone. Official taxis are white and wait at marked ranks; ignore anyone inside the terminal offering a ride.

Private transfers cost more but give you a driver waiting in arrivals with a name sign, which is worth it for families, late arrivals and anyone heading to a hotel far from Termini. Rideshare coverage in Rome is limited compared with US or UK cities, so do not count on it as a fallback.

For one person going to the centre, the train is the cheapest sensible option and the fastest. For two people, the train still wins on price; for three or four, the fixed-fare taxi is often cheaper per person than four train tickets and drops you at the door. Shuttle buses undercut everything but add time and a walk at Termini.

Allow more time than the timetable suggests. Fiumicino is large and the walk from some gates to the train platform takes 10–15 minutes. In the morning and evening rush, road transfers can double their off-peak time.

If you are connecting to a high-speed train, note that it may leave from Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina; check your ticket before choosing the airport train, because the FL1 serves Tiburtina and the Leonardo Express does not. For onward travel around the country, see the Italy guide.

Buy tickets before you board where possible, keep bags with you on the trains, and watch for pickpockets at Termini. If you are staying outside the centre, work out your final leg first: some neighbourhoods are easier from Tiburtina or Ostiense than from Termini.
