Robe

Give Robe two nights if you want the beaches and Little Dip; one night is enough if you are only breaking the Adelaide–Mount Gambier drive.

Robe is a small historic port town on the Limestone Coast, about 340 km and 3.5 hours by car from Adelaide and roughly 500 km from Melbourne. It works as a coastal stop on the B1 between Adelaide and Mount Gambier, with a compact centre, a jetty, a maritime museum and the Little Dip Conservation Park just south. Two nights covers the town and the park without rushing; one night suits a drive-through.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Robe is small and walkable in the centre, but the beaches, Little Dip Conservation Park and the lighthouse need a car. There is no local public transport; a car or a long walk is the only practical option. Fuel up in town before heading into the park.

Lake Butler and marina side

Quieter, some motels overlook the lake; still close to town.

Watch out

Safety

Robe is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are coastal: cold water, rips and strong currents, plus long drives on regional roads with wildlife at dusk.
  • Distances between Limestone Coast towns are long: plan fuel and daylight.
  • Little Dip tracks can be sandy or flooded after rain; check conditions before driving in.
  • Coastal water is cold and can have strong currents and rips: swim between the flags where patrolled.
  • Summer bushfire risk in the region: check fire danger ratings and local alerts before travelling.
