3 days in Rio de Janeiro: itinerary

Rio rewards a simple plan: one mountain a day, one beach, one evening of samba. The two big viewpoints, Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer) and Sugarloaf, are on opposite sides of the city and each takes half a day with travel. Fit them on separate days so a cloudy morning does not cost you both.

Base yourself in Copacabana, Ipanema or Botafogo and you can walk to the beach and reach most sights in 20–40 minutes. Changing hotels mid-stay wastes the time you came for.

Treat every figure below as a 2026 estimate and confirm on the operator's own site before you go. Rio's headline attractions sell timed slots and prices move with the season, so a number quoted months out is a guide, not a promise.

Opening hours also shift: Corcovado's train and van services run on fixed departures, and the Sugarloaf cable car has longer hours in high season. Check the day before, especially in the December–March summer when afternoon cloud can close the view even when the site is open.

Galeão (GIG) is the international airport; Santos Dumont (SDU) sits minutes from the centre and handles many domestic hops. From GIG, an app car or the premium bus takes roughly 40–60 minutes to Copacabana or Ipanema depending on traffic — allow more in the morning and evening peaks.

Flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand mostly land at GIG, often overnight from Europe or North America. Book the airport transfer before you land if you arrive after dark, and pay with a card rather than cash in the unofficial taxi queue.

Once in the city, the metro covers Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and the centre, but not Corcovado or Sugarloaf; use app cars or official vans for those last stretches.
