Rules in force · 3
- Brazil ↗Visa rules differ by passport and have changed in recent years (some nationalities now need an e-visa): check with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or your nearest Brazilian consulate before booking.
- Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.
- Brazil ↗Keep your phone out of sight in the street and on beaches; phone theft is the most common crime against visitors in big cities.
The state's first trip is one city and one base. Rio's beaches, Sugarloaf and Corcovado fill three days; Paraty and Ilha Grande are three to five hours away by road and boat, so moving hotels every night wastes the mornings. Keep the Rio room, travel light, and come back to the same bed.
Where to sleep
Copacabana for first-timers, Ipanema for quieter nights.
Colonial town on the coast; about 4 h each way by road.
Car-free island reached by boat from Angra dos Reis; two nights minimum.

- Rio 4, with a Corcovado and Sugarloaf morning
