Rigaud is a small town of about 7,300 on the Ottawa River, 67 km west of Montreal, built around Mont-Rigaud — a low forested hill in otherwise flat farmland. It works as a half-day stop on Autoroute 40 between Montreal and Ottawa, or a full day if you hike the mountain and eat at a sugar shack. The town centre is two streets and can be crossed on foot in minutes; most attractions sit 10–15 minutes apart by car.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in minutes, but the ski hill, sugar shacks, shrine and trailheads are spread around the mountain — plan on a car, or a taxi, for 10–15 minute hops between them. Exo bus route 61 links Rigaud with Vaudreuil station on weekdays only; from Montreal take Exo train 11 to Vaudreuil then transfer (separate fare).

Safety

Rigaud is a quiet small town and feels safe day and night; the real risks are driving the Autoroute 40 corridor at rush hour, forest insects on the mountain trails, and unlit rural roads after dark.
  • Evening rush hour on Autoroute 40 into Montreal can stretch a 45-minute drive to about 2 hours.
  • Mosquitoes and blackflies in the forest, especially spring and autumn — bring repellent.
  • The Infotourist centre is closed 1 Nov–31 Mar; check hours before relying on it.
  • Sugar shacks are busiest in March and early April and often need reservations.
