A car is easiest: the city is on a grid, but old streets are narrow and one-way, and parking rules bite in the Fan. GRTC buses cover the centre and the Pulse bus rapid transit runs along Broad Street; rides have been free under a grant funded through July 2026, so confirm the current status locally. Safety
- Crime is concentrated in public-housing areas northeast, east and southside; muggings can happen anywhere at night, so avoid walking alone on side streets.
- Shockoe Bottom and the VCU/Fan nightlife areas get rowdy; walk away from confrontations.
- Do not leave anything visible in a parked car — break-ins are common.
- Do not swim or wade in the James inside the city except at known spots like Pony Pasture or Belle Isle's north side; currents and drop-offs are dangerous and the river flash-floods.
- Summer heat and humidity are real: plan indoor stops midday in July and August.
