Rhodes city is the island capital and its transport hub: a UNESCO-listed medieval walled town, a modern New Town behind it, and the ancient Acropolis ruins on the hill 2 km southwest. Most travellers sleep here for 3 nights, then move to Lindos or a beach resort, or day-trip out from here. It is a walking city first, with buses and taxis for everything else.

Getting around

In the Old Town you walk: cars cannot enter and the lanes are unsigned. For the New Town, the Acropolis and the beaches, use the local D.E.S. RODA city buses or taxis; the two island bus stations sit just outside the Old Town wall near the waterfront, one for the west coast (including the airport) and one for KTEL services. Confirm the fare with the driver before you set off.

Inside the Old Town walls

Stone lanes, courtyards and rooftop terraces; 200-odd unnamed lanes, so expect to get lost on arrival. Best for atmosphere and walking to the sights; vehicle access is restricted, so confirm with your accommodation how to reach it with bags.

New Town around the bus stations and Mandraki

Modern hotels, the ferry and yacht harbour, Elli Beach and the commercial port within 10–15 min on foot. Best for transport, ferries and beach access.

Acropolis / Rodini side

Quieter, greener and cheaper, 2 km southwest of the walls; you will use buses or taxis to reach the Old Town.

Watch out

Safety

Rhodes city is a safe, heavily touristed place; the real risks are heat in Jul–Aug, uneven stone lanes, pickpockets in the busiest lanes on cruise days, and scooter or quad rental without a licence or helmet.
  • Old Town lanes are unsigned and slippery when wet: wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.
  • The Palace of the Grand Master is a 20th-century Italian reconstruction on medieval foundations, not an intact knights' castle; check current tickets and hours before you go.
  • Wall walks and some monuments run limited hours and separate tickets: check the day's times on arrival.
  • Summer heat peaks in Jul–Aug: sightsee before 11:00 and after 17:00, and carry water.
  • Cruise-ship days flood the Old Town between roughly 10:00 and 16:00: go early or late.
