Go only if you are already in Arugam Bay or Pottuvil: a half-day jeep safari from the park gate at opening (about 6:00) beats a Colombo day trip; skip it in May–September rain, and skip it entirely if you want guaranteed leopards.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation only on the official government ETA site; lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules and fees change.
  • Sri Lanka ↗At temples cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; Buddha images on clothes or tattoos cause offence.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Carry Sri Lankan rupees in small notes; tuk-tuks, buses and small shops are cash-only, and ATMs are fewer outside the cities.

Kumana National Park, formerly Yala East, is a contiguous block to the famous Yala but managed separately and known primarily for its rich birdlife rather than leopard sightings. It is one of Sri Lanka's most important breeding grounds for migratory waterbirds, including the rare black-necked stork. The park features over twenty tanks (reservoirs) that attract elephants, deer, and crocodiles during the dry season. Access is strictly by safari jeep; walking is prohibited except on specific pilgrimage routes in April and May. It offers a quieter alternative to Yala with fewer vehicles, making it ideal for serious birdwatchers and those seeking a less crowded wildlife experience.

  • Fewer jeeps and calmer drivers than Yala, so sightings are less of a scrum.
  • Twenty-plus tanks (reservoirs) that pull in waders, elephants, deer and crocodiles in the dry months.
  • The April–May pada yatra pilgrimage crosses the park on foot towards Kataragama, and old cave drawings sit near the boundary.

Where to stay

Near the park

Arugam Bay and Pottuvil

The practical base, about 35 km north, with the widest choice of rooms and full hotel services.

Near the park

Kumana-area hotels and camps

A few places close to the park; some lack hot water, so confirm before booking.

Near the park

Tented safari camps

Higher-priced tented camps near the park boundary; book ahead in the December–April season.

Safety

Wild elephants high

Stay inside the jeep at all times; only exit when an elephant is over 60 m away and your guide says it is safe.

Crocodiles in the tanks high

Never approach the water on foot; most tanks hold large crocodiles.

Wild buffalo medium

Keep your distance and stay in the vehicle; they are not aggressive unless provoked.

Snakes in tall grass medium

Avoid tall grass, do not wander off alone, and make noise as you move.

Heat and dehydration medium

Average temperatures sit near 33 °C with high humidity; carry more water than you think you need.

Rough entrance road medium

The 16 km entrance road is badly rutted; expect a slow, bumpy ride and secure loose gear.

Accessibility

  • Safari jeeps are high and require a step up; ask your operator for a vehicle with a lower step if mobility is limited.
  • There are no paved walkways or wheelchair routes inside the park; all viewing is from the vehicle.

Visiting lightly

  • Hire a tracker and a local driver from Pottuvil or Arugam Bay so the money stays in the villages around the park.
  • Do not pressure drivers to chase animals or block other jeeps; Kumana's calmer driving is its main advantage over Yala.
  • Take every wrapper and bottle out with you — there is no rubbish collection inside.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Kumana National Park?

Foreign adults pay roughly Rs 4,000–6,000 (2026 estimate) at the gate, set by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Add a jeep and driver, about Rs 12,000–20,000 per vehicle for a half day, or take a full-day tour from Arugam Bay quoted at about Rs 33,000–45,000 per person including entry. Rates change — check at the gate.

What are the best hikes in Kumana National Park?

There are none inside the park: walking is not allowed and all access is by safari jeep. The walking you can do is outside the boundary — the short climb at Kudumbigala sanctuary and the paths around the Uganthai Malai Murugan Kovil. The April–May pada yatra pilgrimage crosses the park on foot, but that is a religious walk, not a visitor trail.

When is the best time to visit Kumana National Park?

December to April. The dry northerly winds shrink the tanks and concentrate birds, and April brings the start of the breeding season. May to September is the south-west monsoon, with heavy rain and muddy or impassable tracks; June to August is the worst of it.

Is Kumana the same as Yala National Park?

They are contiguous — Kumana was called Yala East until it was renamed in 2006 — but they are managed separately. Kumana is quieter, with fewer jeeps, and is known for birds rather than for leopards.

Can I see a leopard in Kumana?

Possibly, because the park adjoins Yala, but sightings are uncommon and you should not book a Kumana trip expecting one. Elephants, deer, wild boar, crocodiles and birds are the realistic sightings.

How do I get to Kumana National Park?

There is no train. Most visitors base themselves in Arugam Bay or Pottuvil, about 35 km north, and take a taxi or tour jeep to the gate, then the rough 16 km entrance road. From Colombo it is a 7.5–8.5 hour drive.

Do I need a guide or tracker?

You need a vehicle and driver — walking is not permitted. A tracker is optional but recommended for birding, since the tanks and water levels change through the season.
