Kirov is a 500,000-person city on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 12–14 hours by train from Moscow, and the capital of Kirov Oblast. It was called Vyatka and Khlynov before 1934 and keeps a compact centre of museums, cathedrals and river embankments. Two nights covers the museums and the Dymkovo craft workshops; one night is enough if you are only breaking a rail journey. Winters are long and cold, so most travellers aim for late spring to early autumn.

Getting around

Buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas cover the city; a single ride is about RUB 30 (2026 estimate). Taxis are plentiful and cheap by Western standards. The centre is flat and walkable between Spasskaya, Karla Marksa and the river.

Central Kirov is calm by day and evening; the usual big-city cautions apply after dark. The bigger issues for visitors are paperwork and payments, not street crime.
