AppletonAppleton, Wisconsin

Give Appleton one full day and one night: downtown College Avenue on foot, the Houdini museum, then a car for the Fox River Mall or a Packers weekend in Green Bay.

Appleton is a small Fox River city of about 72,000 people in central-eastern Wisconsin, halfway between Milwaukee and Green Bay on Interstate 41. Downtown is compact and walkable, the museums are cheap, and the real draw for most visitors is the shopping corridor west of town plus Packers and EAA AirVenture traffic nearby. One day covers the centre; add a second only if you are shopping or catching a show.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Valley Transit buses run through the city with a low flat fare and free same-day transfers (check current fare and routes). Downtown is walkable; Bird e-scooters cover short hops (check availability). For the mall, the airport and day trips you want a car or rideshare. Street parking is banned citywide from 2 AM to 5 AM, so confirm overnight parking with your hotel.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / College Avenue

Walk to restaurants, bars and the PAC; the Paper Valley and Copperleaf hotels are here.

Fox River Mall area (Grand Chute)

Chain hotels and big-box shopping along I-41; you need a car for everything.

Northland Avenue / north side

Cheaper motels and a small mall; a short drive from downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Appleton is a quiet, low-crime city by US standards; the practical risks are winter driving, unlit river paths after dark and theft from unlocked cars.
  • No street parking anywhere in the city between 2 AM and 5 AM; overnight permits are often refused in fall and winter for leaf collection and snow clearing.
  • Winter driving: snow, ice and wind chill; keep an emergency kit in the car.
  • Lock the car and hide valuables — thefts from unlocked vehicles happen.
  • Packers home games and EAA AirVenture fill every hotel within 50 km (31 mi); book months ahead or avoid those weekends.
