Topsham is a small former port on the Exe estuary, 4 miles south of Exeter, with a walkable centre, a riverside bird reserve and an unusual number of good places to eat for its size. It works as a single night or a half-day stop on the Exeter–Exmouth rail line, not as a multi-day base.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Trains on the Exeter–Exmouth line stop at Topsham station, and buses run between the Quay and Exeter. A car is a liability in the centre: park and walk.

Safety

Topsham is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day or evening. The real risks are tidal mud on the estuary, unlit lanes after dark and uneven pavements on the older streets.
  • The estuary is tidal mudflat: check tide times before walking the Goatwalk shoreline, and keep to the path.
  • Many kitchens stop serving by 14:30 and again after 20:30; book or eat early.
  • Some pubs and cafés close one or two days midweek out of season: check before you travel.
  • The Topsham–Exmouth ferry is seasonal and tide-dependent: check it is running before you rely on it.
