Kapfenberg is a steel town of about 23,000 on the Mürz river, stretched along a valley floor with the S6 motorway and the Vienna–Graz rail line running through it. The old centre is small: a main square, a city hall, a riverside promenade and a castle on the hill above. Most travellers pass through on the train; the town works as a cheap one-night stop on the Mürz valley line, a base for the Rettenwandhöhle cave in summer, or a look at the industrial history that put it on the map.

Getting around

Local buses (MVG, one- and two-digit numbers) and regional buses (three-digit numbers) cover the valley; buy tickets from the driver. Lines 1, 2 and 180 run the main line between Bruck an der Mur and Kapfenberg Euromarkt. Line 25 links Europaplatz to the Werk VI industrial quarter. The town is stretched, so walking between the station, Europaplatz and the old centre is fine, but you will want a bus for Euromarkt or the campus.

Safety

A quiet, safe small town; the real risks are winter ice on the pavements, the fast S6 motorway through the valley and quiet streets after dark outside the centre.
  • Rail upgrade works regularly replace local trains with buses that stop in front of the station: check the day before you travel.
  • The town is spread along a valley with the motorway through it; distances between the centre, Euromarkt and Werk VI are longer than they look on a map.
  • Outside the old centre and Europaplatz, evenings are quiet: eat before 19:00 or plan around the few places that stay open.
