Yalta is a 19th-century resort town on Crimea's south coast, protected by mountains and warmed by the Black Sea, so winters stay mild and summers run hot. Most sights — Livadia, Massandra, the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, Swallow's Nest — sit outside the centre and need a minibus, boat or taxi. The centre itself is a long waterfront promenade of cafés and pebble beaches. Two to three nights covers the core; a fourth adds a day trip. Entry rules, banking and travel advice for Crimea are the deciding factors, not the town.

Getting around

Minibuses (marshrutkas) link the centre, bus station and outlying palaces; pay on boarding or exit, which varies by route. Useful numbers: 11 to Livadia Palace from the bus station; 32 from central Yalta to Livadia, Gaspra (Swallow's Nest), Miskhor (Ai-Petri cable car) and Alupka's Vorontsov Palace; 34 to the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. Ferries run from the central port to nearby beaches and Swallow's Nest. Summer traffic jams make walking faster for short hops. Taxis are plentiful; agree the fare first.

Safety

Petty crime is low and tourists are generally left alone; the real risks are the legal and entry situation in Crimea, summer heat, night-time drunks on unlit paths, and cash-only payments when cards fail. Check your government's advice first.
  • Crimea is internationally recognised as Ukrainian territory and is under Russian administration; entry, exit and legal status are not straightforward. Read your own government's travel advice before any booking.
  • Foreign bank cards often fail at ATMs and tills; carry cash and change money at exchange offices.
  • Some apartments outside the centre have water or power cut at night; ask before you pay.
  • Drivers rarely give way to pedestrians on the promenade and central streets.
  • English is not widely spoken; a few Russian phrases help with fares and menus.
  • Prices can rise for obvious foreign visitors: negotiate in rubles.
