Manitouwadge is a small Northern Ontario township of about 2,000 people, built in the 1950s for the Geco copper mine and now a base for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and downhill skiing. It sits 52 km north of Highway 17 on Highway 614, 331 km east of Thunder Bay and 378 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. There is no scheduled air service and no useful rail stop, so you arrive by car or not at all. Come for the outdoors and the low prices, not for town sights.

Getting around

You need a car. Highway 614 is the only paved link, running 52 km south to Highway 17 between Marathon and White River. In town, Bob's Taxi covers short trips. Logging roads such as the Caramat Industrial Road are open to the public but have no cell service, little traffic and no help if you break down.

Watch out

Safety

Violent crime is rare; the real risks are the drive and the weather. Cell signal ends about 8 km outside town, winter storms can close Highway 614, and logging roads have no help if you break down. Tell someone your route and carry water, a spare tyre and a full tank.
  • Cell coverage stops about 8 km outside town; on logging roads you are on your own.
  • The Caramat Industrial Road can be blocked by washouts, fallen trees or snow for days.
  • Winter driving on Highway 614 needs winter tyres; snow clearing can take time after a storm.
