Lincoln is a small Central Illinois county seat on I-55 and the old Route 66, and the only US town named for Abraham Lincoln while he was still a lawyer. He worked here from 1847 to 1859. The draw is a compact historic downtown, a courthouse square and a set of Route 66 photo stops, not a multi-day destination. Amtrak's Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle both stop in town, so it works as a car-free overnight between Chicago and St. Louis.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and motels are spread along I-55 and 5th St, and sidewalks outside downtown are thin. Downtown itself is walkable in 10–15 min end to end. Amtrak drops you at 101 N Chicago St, about a 5-min walk from the square; from there you need a taxi or rideshare for the interstate motels and the air museum.

Lincoln is a quiet small city; the practical risks are driving I-55 in storms, unlit rural roads at night and long empty stretches between services. Local crime figures: check before you go.
  • Distances between downtown, the interstate motels and the air museum are too long to walk; plan a car, taxi or rideshare.
  • Small-town schedules: many restaurants close early and some shut on Sundays — check hours the same day.
