Willcox is a small Cochise County town on I-10, roughly halfway between Tucson and the New Mexico line, and the practical gateway to Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie National Historic Site. The historic core is walkable in an hour; everything else needs a car. Most travellers use it as one or two nights, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The historic core is walkable. For Chiricahua, Fort Bowie, the vineyards and Apple Annie's you need a car; there is no useful local bus. Greyhound stops at 100 S Arizona St for pick-up and drop-off only, so buy tickets before you travel.

Watch out

Safety

Willcox is a quiet small town and crime is not the main risk. Heat, long empty drives, unpaved roads and wildlife are: carry water, tell someone your route, and do not hike Fort Bowie or the Chiricahua trails in the afternoon in summer.
  • I-10 carries heavy truck traffic at speeds well above the posted 75 mph: keep right unless passing and expect crosswinds.
  • Fort Bowie is reached by 8 miles of unpaved road plus a 1.5-mile trail each way: no water, no shade, no cell signal in places.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35–38 °C and monsoon storms bring flash flooding on dirt roads.
  • The pioneer cemetery sits off a dirt road: watch for fire ants and rattlesnakes.
  • Restaurant choice is thin outside fast-food chains; many kitchens close by 20:00–21:00.
