Merang

Use Merang as a ferry gateway to Redang and Lang Tengah, not a destination: one night max, or just a few hours between arrival and boat departure.

Merang is a small port town on the Terengganu coast, best known as the main departure point for ferries to Redang and Lang Tengah islands. There is little to do in town itself — a short beach, a handful of basic eateries and a jetty. Most travellers arrive from Kuala Terengganu (about 45 min by bus or taxi) and leave the same day on a ferry. If your island ferry schedule forces an overnight, one night is enough.

Watch out

Safety

Merang is safe and quiet. The main risks are cancelled ferries in monsoon season and limited medical facilities — serious cases go to Kuala Terengganu.
  • Ferry schedules depend on weather and season; check with your island resort before booking.
  • Monsoon season (Nov–Feb) cancels most ferry crossings.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring enough ringgit from Kuala Terengganu.
  • Mosquitoes near the beach and mangroves; bring repellent.
