- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
New Orleans is a compact, walkable city where the trip is food, music and neighbourhoods rather than a checklist of sights. Three nights covers the French Quarter, the CBD museums and a night of live music; four or five adds Uptown, City Park and a day trip. Spring and autumn are the good windows; summer is hot, wet and inside the hurricane season.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The French Quarter, CBD and Marigny are walkable and you rarely need a car. Streetcars run on Canal Street, along the riverfront and up St. Charles Avenue to Uptown; buses fill the gaps. Rideshare and taxis are cheap for short hops; a car is only worth it for plantations or the swamp.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Plantation country (River Parishes)
goDoor to door: About 1 h each way
Car or an organised tour upriver on I-10 and River Road
Two houses in a day is enough; Oak Alley and Laura are the usual pairing.
Honey Island Swamp
goDoor to door: About 1 h each way
Guided boat tour from Slidell or a West Bank launch
Book ahead; morning tours see more wildlife.
Baton Rouge
cautionDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Amtrak City of New Orleans or I-10 by car
Doable as a day, but the state capital rewards an overnight more.
Chalmette Battlefield
goDoor to door: About 30 min
Car or rideshare downriver
The 1815 battlefield site; pair with a riverfront stop.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
French Quarter
Walk to most sights and music; loudest streets are Bourbon and the lower Decatur blocks, so ask for a courtyard-side room.
Central Business District (CBD) and Warehouse District
Chain hotels, the National WWII Museum and Julia Street galleries; 10–15 min walk to the Quarter, quieter at night.
Faubourg Marigny
Across Esplanade from the Quarter; Frenchmen Street clubs are on the doorstep and rooms are often cheaper.
Uptown and Garden District
St. Charles Avenue streetcar, Magazine Street shops and local restaurants; 20–30 min by streetcar to the centre.
Mid-City and Esplanade Ridge
City Park, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Fair Grounds; cheaper, more local, needs the streetcar or a bus.
