Mestre is the mainland half of Venice, where most Venetians actually live: a normal Italian city of about 89,000 with a pedestrian centre, trams, bike lanes and cheaper hotels. Trains and buses reach Venice in 10–20 minutes, and Marco Polo airport is closer than from the lagoon. It is a base, not a sightseeing destination — pick it for price, parking or an early flight, not for atmosphere.

Getting around

The centre is walkable and partly pedestrianised. Trams T1 and T2 plus ACTV buses cover the rest; tickets are bought before boarding and validated. Trains from Venezia Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia run every few minutes and take about 10 minutes. Bikes work well: the city has long, maintained bike lanes.

Watch out

Safety

Mestre is a normal Italian city and safe by day; the station area and Via Piave are the spots to watch at night for pickpockets and drunks. Petty theft, not violence, is the realistic risk.
  • A Mestre hotel is only cheaper if you count the daily return fare into Venice and the cost of eating there.
  • You cannot reach St Mark's for sunrise or stay late in Venice and get back easily: last trains and buses run around midnight.
  • Fish on menus is often priced by weight — €5 (≈ US$6) for bass may mean per 100 g.
  • Via Piave and the station underpass have pickpockets and street drinking at night; keep bags zipped.
  • Parking in Venice itself is expensive and restricted; Mestre is the practical place to leave a car.
