Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Llantrisant is a small hilltop town in Glamorgan, about 12 miles northwest of Cardiff, known for the Royal Mint and for a compact historic core: the Bull Ring square, a single surviving castle wall, a church with a 13th-century effigy and the Billy Wynt tower on Y Graig. It is a half-day stop, not a base, unless the Mint tour is the reason for coming. Most travellers sleep in Cardiff or Pontyclun and reach it by bus, train plus taxi, or car.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic core is small and steep: Bull Ring, castle, church and Y Graig are all within a 10–15 min walk, with steps between levels. Buses link Llantrisant with Pontyclun, Talbot Green and Cardiff; Pontyclun station is about 3 miles away, so a taxi or bus finishes the trip. A car makes the Royal Mint, Miskin and the Vale Resort straightforward; parking in the centre is limited.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 40–60 min

Car via the M4 and A470, or train from Pontyclun to Cardiff Central

Castle, museum and bay; the obvious full-day pairing with Llantrisant.

Pontypridd

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Car via the A473, or bus from Llantrisant

Market town on the Taff; combine with a walk on the Taff Trail.

Door to door: 25–35 min

Car via the A473, or bus

Useful for the McArthurGlen outlet and onward trains west.

Barry

caution

Door to door: 45–60 min

Car via the M4 and A4232 (≈ US$6,000), or train from Pontyclun via Cardiff

Seafront and island; the rail route doubles back through Cardiff.

Swanseaovernight

Door to door: 1 h 15 min–1 h 45 min

Train from Pontyclun via Cardiff, or car via the M4

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there instead.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Llantrisant town centre

Guesthouses and pubs around the Bull Ring; walkable to the castle, church and High Street.

Talbot Green

Retail park and chain hotels just below the hill; easiest parking and the closest thing to a bed cluster.

Pontyclun

Rail station on the South Wales Main Line, about 3 miles away; useful if you are arriving by train.

Cardiff

Best base for a wider Glamorgan trip; 30–40 min by car or train plus taxi to Llantrisant.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are steep wet lanes, unlit rural roads around Miskin and Groesfaen, and short pub hours rather than crime.
  • The town is on a hill with steep lanes and steps: not ideal with heavy bags or limited mobility.
  • The Royal Mint Experience needs a booked time slot; walk-up entry is not guaranteed.
  • Llantrisant Castle is a single ruined wall in parkland: do not plan a long visit around it.
  • Rural lanes around Miskin and Groesfaen have no pavement in places; walk facing traffic.
  • Many small pubs and cafés keep short or irregular hours: check before you climb the hill.

  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Royal Mint Experience, Llantrisant Church, Model House) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Beating the Bounds fixture: the seven-year cycle date, so the page can flag the next occurrence.
