Whitley Bay is a seaside town on the North Tyneside coast, about 30 minutes from Newcastle city centre on the Metro Yellow Line. The draw is two miles of sand, the restored Spanish City dome and St Mary's Lighthouse on its tidal islet. It works as a day trip or a single relaxed night; most travellers base in Newcastle and ride out.

Getting around

The Metro Yellow Line has three stations here (Monkseaton, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats) and runs to Newcastle in just under 30 min. Buses 308 and 309 also link the town with Newcastle in about 40 min. Locally, everything from the station to the beach is walkable in 10–15 min.

Safety

A calm, low-crime seaside town; the real risks are cold water and rip currents, the fast tide at St Mary's causeway, and unlit clifftop paths after dark.
  • St Mary's causeway is only crossable for about four hours either side of low tide; check a tide table before you set out.
  • Dogs are banned on the south section of beach from 1 May to 30 Sep.
  • Some seafront restaurants close early or shut midweek outside summer; check before you walk over.
