Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Farnborough is a mid-sized Hampshire town 35 miles south-west of London, built on aviation: Britain's first powered flight took off here in 1904, and the biennial Farnborough International Airshow still runs in even-numbered years. The visitor core is small — St Michael's Abbey with the exiled French imperial tomb, the FAST aviation museum and the Victorian North Camp pub and restaurant strip — so most travellers use it as a one-night stop between London and the south coast, or as an airshow base. It sits in the London commuter belt, so beds and trains are priced accordingly.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is small and walkable: Farnborough Main station to the town centre is about 800 m, and the centre to North Camp is roughly 2.5 km. Stagecoach local buses run from Kingsmead bus station; single fares are up to about £2 and a Blackwater Valley day rider about £6.30 (2026 estimate, check current fares). Cycle routes are mostly off-road or segregated, but some signs are damaged — carry a map. Parking is plentiful and rarely free.

Southampton

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train from Farnborough Main via Basingstoke or Winchester

City walls, SeaCity museum and the Isle of Wight ferry.

Bus 10 from Kingsmead, or a short drive west

Small town with heathland walks; bus runs roughly hourly on weekdays.

Eastleigh

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Useful mainly as an airport and rail stop rather than a day out.

Drive via M3 and A338

New Forest edge; a car makes this worthwhile, public transport does not.

Ringwood

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive via M3 and A31

New Forest gateway town; best paired with Fordingbridge by car.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Kingsmead)

Buses, shops and the Meads car park; 800 m walk from Farnborough Main station. Best for one night without a car.

North Camp / South Farnborough

Victorian strip with the best pubs and restaurants; North Camp station on the Reading–Gatwick line.

Farnborough Street (north-east)

Oldest part of town, near St Michael's Abbey and Farnborough North station; quiet, one train per hour.

Airport and business parks (south-west)

Chain hotels for the airshow and business travel; car-first, little within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime commuter town; the real risks are traffic on the A325 and A331, unlit heathland paths after dark, and airshow-week crowds and road closures.
  • Airshow week in even-numbered years fills hotels and roads; book months ahead or avoid those dates.
  • Some cycle-path signs are vandalised and point the wrong way; use a map app.
  • Farnborough Airport (FAB) has no scheduled passenger flights — do not book it as a commercial arrival.
  • Trains from London Waterloo vary from 35 min to about 1 h depending on stops; check the timetable before buying.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Farnborough. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Jul–Aug airshow week (packed, hotel prices spike); Dec–Feb (wet, dark by 16:00) · month by month →
  2. 4 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LHR and LGW: last-train times to Farnborough Main and North Camp, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Kingsmead centre, North Camp, Farnborough Street and the abbey, the airport and RAE Heritage Quarter.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (FAST Museum, St Michael's Abbey, Farnborough Hill) and eat pages with last orders on the North Camp strip.
  4. Airshow-week fixtures so gates A–D can go green: dated tickets, park-and-ride, hotel price spike.
