Skip as a base: use Torrelavega as a 2–3 h rail or bus stop between Santander and Santillana del Mar, or sleep one night if you arrive late.
Torrelavega is Cantabria's second city and its transport junction: mainline Renfe, the C2 cercanías from Santander and the bus station all meet here. The centre is small and modern, rebuilt around a chemical industry that still dominates the north suburbs. Almost everything travellers want in this corner of Spain — Santillana del Mar, Altamira, Comillas, Suances beaches — sits 9–30 km away, so most people change trains here rather than stay.
