Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Go for a half day: pay the day-use fee, walk the short old-growth loop from the main entrance before 10:00, and skip the waterfall and long ridge routes — most of the trail network is still closed after the 2020 fire. Check the official closures list the morning you drive; no camping, no drinking water, no cell signal.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Big Basin is California's oldest state park, set in a fog-fed valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains about an hour from San Jose. It protects old-growth coast redwood, and the 2020 CZU fire burned more than 97% of the park, destroying the headquarters and every campground. Redwoods survive fire, and the park has reopened for day use, but only part of the trail network is back. Treat it as a short, self-sufficient visit: bring all your water, expect no shops or fuel, and check the official closures page the morning you drive.

Why go

  • Old-growth coast redwood within day-trip range of the Bay Area — no long drive north required.
  • The Redwood Loop is flat, short and fully accessible, so it works for mixed-ability groups.
  • Fire ecology you can see up close: blackened trunks with new green growth at the base.
  • Quiet compared with Muir Woods, especially on weekday mornings.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Redwood Loop is paved, flat and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • Accessible restrooms are available near the main visitor area.
  • Ridge trails are steep, uneven and not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on open trails — closed routes are still recovering and soils are fragile after fire.
  • Pack out all rubbish; do not rely on bins being available.
  • Do not collect wood, plants or fallen redwood burls.
  • Carpool or take the seasonal weekend bus; parking is limited and the road is narrow.
