Nenagh is a market town of about 9,900 people in County Tipperary, a joint county town with Clonmel since the north/south ridings were abolished in 2014. Its Norman castle keep and 13th-century friary sit within a few minutes of each other, and Banba Square holds the courthouse and the heritage centre in the old county jail. Most travellers see the town in half a day and use it as a base for the eastern shore of Lough Derg, 10 km northwest, which needs a car.

The centre and Tyone are walkable. There is no town bus; the three local taxi firms have closed, so a taxi may have to come from Limerick — book ahead. You need a car for Dromineer, Garrykennedy and the Silvermines hills.

Safety

Nenagh is a quiet, low-risk town; the real issues are thin taxi cover, dark rural lanes without footpaths, and weather that changes fast on Keeper Hill and the lough.
  • Castle and heritage centre hours are limited and shorter in winter: check before you travel.
  • The castle's 101 spiral steps are steep and narrow; not for large bags or anyone unsteady on stairs.
  • The railway station has no ticket collection facilities — buy online or on board where allowed.
  • Taxi cover in town is thin; arrange return trips in advance.
  • Rural lanes around Lough Derg are narrow; drive on the left and expect walkers and cyclists.
