Tornio sits on the Swedish border, joined to Haparanda into one practical cross-border town. It is Finland's oldest town in Lapland (1621) and lives on border trade, so the draw is cheap Swedish shopping, the wooden church and the Tornio river rapids rather than a full sightseeing list. Most travellers use it for a night between Kemi and Sweden, or a half-day from Kemi.

Getting around

The centre is small and flat: walk everywhere, including across the border to Haparanda. Local buses run within Tornio; taxis and app services cover the airport and Kukkola. A car helps for the rapids, the national park and the steel-mill side of town.

Safety

Tornio is calm and safe for tourists; the real issues are winter ice, dark early afternoons and the one-hour time change across the border. Keep ID on you at the crossing.
  • Sweden is one hour behind Finland: check the clock before buses, trains and shop hours.
  • Many sights and restaurants close outside summer without advertising it: confirm before you travel.
  • Winter roads and pavements are icy; winter tyres are required Dec–Feb if driving.
  • The border is open to walk across, but bring your passport or ID: checks can happen.
