Petawawa is a town of about 18,000 on the south shore of the Ottawa River, built around CFB Petawawa, one of Canada's largest army bases. It is not a sightseeing town: the reasons to stop are the river, the Algonquin Trail, the military museum and the eastern access points of Algonquin Provincial Park. Most travellers pass through on Highway 17 between Ottawa and North Bay, or use it as a cheaper bed than Pembroke for a paddling or snowmobile weekend.

Getting around

A car is the default: the town is spread along Highway 17 and the river, and the trailheads, boat launches and park access points are outside the centre. The Algonquin Trail runs through town along Petawawa Blvd for walking and cycling. Ontario Northland coaches stop on Petawawa Blvd between Ottawa and Sudbury, but they do not cover the local sights.

Watch out

Safety

Petawawa is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 17, fast cold water on the rivers, and wildlife on the trails around Algonquin's east side.
  • CFB Petawawa is an active military base: only the museum area is open to visitors, and you may be asked for photo ID at the gate.
  • The north shore of the Barron River is military land; only the south shore is provincial park.
  • Black bears and ticks are real in the bush around Algonquin's east side: store food properly, check yourself after hikes.
  • Cell coverage thins out fast on the back roads toward Achray and Barron Canyon.
  • Winter driving on Highway 17 is snow-and-ice driving: check conditions before a night run.
