Ilagan is the capital of Isabela and one of the Philippines' largest cities by land area, but its sights sit in three separate clusters — Alibagu, Baligatan and the old poblacion — strung along the Maharlika Highway. It works as a one-night stop on the Manila–Tuguegarao bus route or as a base for the January Bambanti Festival, not as a multi-day destination on its own.

Getting around

Tricycles cover short hops in each cluster; distances between Alibagu, Baligatan and the poblacion are several kilometres, so a car or a hired tricycle by the hour is more practical than walking. Jeepneys link downtown with Cauayan, Roxas and Gamu; vans run the Tuguegarao–Santiago City route along the highway.

Watch out

Safety

Ilagan is a normal provincial capital — petty theft and traffic are the everyday risks, and river flooding is the real hazard from July to October. Keep to lit streets at night and check road conditions before travelling in the wet season.
  • Lowland areas along the Cagayan, Abuan and Pinacanauan rivers flood in the rainy season; the national highway has been inundated before.
  • Saint Ferdinand Parish Church was gutted by fire in 2024 and is under reconstruction — check before planning a visit.
  • The city is spread out; do not assume you can walk between the capitol and the old downtown.
  • Meat section of the public market is smoky from vendors smoking; not a health risk but unpleasant.
