Cley next the Sea is a village of about 400 people on the A149 North Norfolk coast road, between Wells-next-the-Sea and Sheringham. It is a birdwatching and walking stop rather than a sightseeing town: the draw is the Cley and Salthouse Marshes reserve, the shingle beach a mile from the centre, and the walk towards Blakeney Point. Most visitors see it in a day, or sleep one or two nights and use it as a quiet base for the north Norfolk coast.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk: High Street, the visitor centre and the windmill are all within about 10 minutes on foot. Cley Beach is roughly 1 mile from the centre along the signposted Norfolk Coast Path. The A149 High Street is narrow and shared with traffic, so walk single file. Buses (the CH1 Coasthopper and the limited Sanders 46) link Wells, Blakeney, Sheringham and Cromer; a car makes the coast much easier, and parking is at the village hall and at the beach.

Watch out

Safety

Cley is a low-crime rural village and safe for visitors. The real risks are the narrow A149 with no pavement, fast-changing tides and soft mud on the marshes, and long unlit stretches on the coast path after dark.
  • The A149 through the village is narrow and has no proper pavement in places: walk facing traffic.
  • Cley Beach is about a 20-minute walk from the centre with no facilities at the end; take water and check tide times.
  • Dogs are restricted on parts of the beach and the Point in bird nesting season (spring and summer).
  • Blakeney Point is reached on foot from Cley Beach or by ferry from Morston Quay; ferries are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check before you rely on one.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the marsh and along the coast path.
  • Many cafés, galleries and shops close one day a week and run shorter hours outside summer: check the day you plan to go.
