LongviewLongview, Alberta

Give Longview half a day plus one night, or pass through on the Cowboy Trail: Bar U Ranch and a beef lunch are the whole stop.

Longview is a village of about 300 people on Highway 22, 64 km south of Calgary and 32 km west of High River, sitting under the first range of the Rockies. It is a ranching and oil town with one national historic site nearby, a famous jerky shop and a handful of beds. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the Cowboy Trail between Calgary and the Crowsnest Pass, or as a quiet one-night base for the Highwood River and Kananaskis Country.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. Longview sits on Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail); Bar U Ranch is about 12 km south of the village on Highway 22. There is no local bus, no taxi rank and no rideshare coverage worth relying on. Distances in km, driving on the right, home licence fine for short visits.

Gravel and seasonal closures; check road and fire status first.

Morrison Road (village centre)

The main street; the Twin Cities Hotel and the Blue Sky Motel are both here, walking distance from the jerky shop and the cafés.

High River (32 km east)

Bigger choice of chain motels and restaurants if Longview's few rooms are full; adds about 25 min each way.

Kananaskis Country and Highwood Junction (west)

Campgrounds and lodges along Highway 541 for hikers; check seasonal road and fire closures before committing.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 22, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and no nearby hospital or fuel.
  • No fuel, no hospital and patchy mobile signal in the village: fill up in High River or Okotoks.
  • Winter driving on Highway 22 and Highway 541 can close without notice; check Alberta 511 before leaving.
  • Bar U Ranch is seasonal (roughly mid-May to mid-September) and charges admission: check the Parks Canada page for 2026 dates and hours.
  • Summer wildfire smoke and closures in Kananaskis Country are common: check Alberta wildfire status.
  • Cell coverage drops fast west of the village toward the Highwood.
