Anna Maria Island

Stay 2–3 nights on the island, or day-trip from Bradenton if you can't book a bed: the free trolley runs 6:00–22:00 and parking fills by mid-morning.

A 11 km barrier island off Florida's Gulf Coast, split into three small towns: Anna Maria in the north, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach in the south. The draw is white-sand Gulf beaches, calm water and slow evenings, not sightseeing. Two or three nights is enough; a week suits families who want beach days. Book accommodation early for winter and spring, when snowbird demand pushes rental prices up.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The free Manatee County trolley runs the length of the island, Coquina Beach to the Anna Maria city pier, with departures from the terminal stops 6:00–22:00 daily and about 30 min end to end. Bikes are the best way to cover short hops; a car helps for groceries and mainland trips but parking at beaches fills early.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime resort island; the real risks are summer heat, rip currents, sunburn and storm season. Lock bikes and cars, and keep an eye on the Gulf forecast.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and evacuation zones before booking summer.
  • The Cortez Bridge backs up from about 14:00–15:00; cross earlier or later.
  • Beach and street parking fills by mid-morning in season.
  • Rip currents are possible on Gulf beaches: swim near lifeguards.
