Banaue is a small mountain town in Ifugao, 9–10 h by overnight bus from Manila, built around 2,000-year-old rice terraces that are a National Cultural Treasure. The town itself is a base, not the sight: the terraces at the main viewdeck, the villages of Batad and Hapao, and the walks between them are why you come. Two nights is the practical minimum; three if you add Sagada or Bontoc.

Getting around

Jeepneys and tricycles cover the town and the road to the viewdeck; agree the fare before you get in. Vans with a driver can be hired in town for Hapao, Bontoc or Sagada. The public jeepney to the Batad saddle point leaves Banaue around 14:00–16:00 and returns around 09:30–10:30 — check the times at the tourism office on arrival, since they shift with the season.

Watch out

Safety

Banaue is a small, low-crime mountain town and the main risk is the road, not crime: landslides and blind curves in the wet months, and steep, slippery terrace steps. Carry cash, tell your lodge where you are walking, and take a guide for village treks.
  • There is no reliable ATM in Banaue. Bring enough pesos from Manila, Baguio or Lagawe; some lodges let you draw cash against a card for a fee.
  • Mountain roads have blind curves and landslide risk in the wet months; road time from Manila is 9–10 h, not the 7 h a map suggests.
  • Expect a ₱50 (≈ under US$1) environmental fee at the Municipal Tourism Office on arrival.
  • The Museum of Cordilleran Sculpture was closed as of September 2023 — check before you walk up.
  • Guides and drivers should have the correct licences for checkpoints around Bontoc; ask before you hire.
