Providence

Give Providence 2 nights: one for College Hill and Benefit Street, one for Federal Hill and Waterplace Park. Skip it as a day trip from Boston.

Providence is Rhode Island's capital and New England's third-largest city, 35 minutes from Boston by train and about 3 hours from New York. It is compact enough to walk downtown, and its draw is a walkable historic core: Brown University and Benefit Street on College Hill, Italian-American Federal Hill, and the river walks at Waterplace Park. Two nights covers the city; add a third for Roger Williams Park or a Newport run.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is compact and walkable; College Hill is a 10–15 min uphill walk from Downcity. RIPTA buses run from Kennedy Plaza, base fare $2.00 with a $0.75 transfer (check). Amtrak and MBTA commuter rail serve Providence station at 100 Gaspee Street. A car helps only for day trips.

Watch out

Safety

Providence is generally safe in the tourist core by day and evening. The real risks are winter storms, unlit blocks south of downtown at night, and bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 a drink, 15–20% taxis.
  • Winter storms can cancel trains and flights; check before a January or February trip.
  • Some blocks south of downtown have higher property-crime rates at night; stay on lit streets.
