Telegraph Cove is a 20-person former cannery village on Johnstone Strait, 349 km northwest of Nanaimo and 14 km off Highway 19. The whole place is a boardwalk you cross in five minutes. You come here for one reason: boats and kayaks into the orca water of Johnstone Strait and Robson Bight. A 2024 fire destroyed the restaurant and interpretive centre; as of spring 2026 they are still being rebuilt and are expected to reopen soon, so plan meals and indoor time around that. One night covers a single tour; two nights let you add a second.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists: the village is tiny and walkable. The real risks are cold, fast tidal water, afternoon wind on Johnstone Strait, wildlife on shore and the long drive to the nearest hospital, about 25 min away in Port McNeill.
  • Book whale-watching and grizzly tours ahead: Jul–Sep is the busiest window and availability check is advised.
  • The 2024 fire took out the restaurant and interpretive centre; as of spring 2026 they are still being rebuilt and are expected to reopen soon — carry food or eat in Port McNeill.
  • Cell and data coverage is patchy on this coast; download maps and tickets before you drive in.
  • Tidal currents and afternoon wind make Johnstone Strait rough for inexperienced kayakers: go guided.
  • Wildlife rules: stay back from bears and marine mammals, and keep food out of tents and vehicles.
  • Fuel, groceries and a 24/7 emergency department are in Port McNeill, about 25 min away.
