Bogolyubovo is a village 3 km east of Vladimir on the high bank of the Nerl, part of the Golden Ring and a UNESCO World Heritage site through the white-stone monuments of the 12th century. There is one essential sight — the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl — plus the convent with the surviving Staircase Tower of Andrey Bogolyubsky's palace. There are no hotels, so you sleep in Vladimir and come out for a morning or afternoon.

Getting around

Walk. The convent sits on Lenina street, the old Moscow–Nizhny Novgorod road; the church is reached only on foot, about 15 min south across the railway tracks and through the meadow. Buses 103 and 152 from Vladimir stop along the main road.

Safe in daylight with the tour groups; the village is quiet and dim after dark, spring floods the meadow path, and beggars near the convent can be pushy. Keep your stay in Vladimir.
