Jelenia Góra is a town of about 100,000 at the foot of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze), roughly 2 hours by train from Wrocław. It has a compact old town, a spa district, Cieplice, folded into the city, and it works as a cheaper, quieter base than Karpacz or Szklarska Poręba for the same mountain trails. Most travellers give it one or two nights and use it as a launch point, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; MZK buses link the old town, Cieplice, Sobieszów and Jagniątków. Regional trains (Koleje Dolnośląskie, Polregio) and PKS buses run to Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba and Wrocław. A car helps for the smaller villages.
