Alaverdi is the service town for the Debed Canyon in Lori, the largest settlement between Vanadzor and the Georgian border. The town itself is a copper-mining strip along the river with little to see; the reason to come is the pair of UNESCO monasteries on the cliffs above it — Sanahin and Haghpat — plus Akhtala, Odzun and Kobayr within a short drive. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night base for the canyon rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The town is walkable along the river, but the monasteries are on the cliffs above, so you need wheels for everything else. Marshrutka #3 runs to Sanahin every 30 min (100 dram), #063 to Haghpat (200 dram), and buses toward Vanadzor pass Odzun every hour (200–300 dram). Taxis are plentiful: about 1,000 dram up to Sanahin, 1,500 dram to Odzun (drivers may ask 2,000 from visitors — hold at 1,500), or charter one for Haghpat plus Akhtala for about 5,000 dram. The Alaverdi–Sarahart cable car has been out of service since 2019; do not plan around it. The M-6 through town and the climb to Sanahin were repaved by 2024, but side roads remain rough.

Fortified monastery with the best frescoes in Armenia after Kobayr. Pair it with Haghpat in one taxi charter.

Above the town, next to Sanahin Monastery and the Mikoyan Brothers Museum. Best base: quiet, views, walkable to the monastery. Marshrutka #3 from the bus and train stations, 100 dram.

Alaverdi town centre

Along the Debed River on the M-6. Practical for buses, banks and the market; one hotel and a couple of B&Bs. Noisy, industrial, little of historic interest.

Haghpat village

6 km north of Alaverdi, next to Haghpat Monastery. Several family B&Bs and small hotels; marshrutka #063 links it to Alaverdi (200 dram).

Odzun village

South of Alaverdi, 10 km uphill. B&Bs from about 6,000–8,000 dram per person and a renovated Soviet-era rest house with a pool.

Watch out

Safety

Alaverdi is a small, low-crime town and the canyon villages are calm. The real risks are the narrow M-6 shared with mining trucks, steep and sometimes slippery monastery trails, and the closed Georgian border zone north of Khuchapi — check access before driving up.
  • The Alaverdi–Sarahart cable car is broken and has been for years: check locally before relying on it.
  • The M-6 in the canyon is narrow and carries mining trucks; walk facing traffic and avoid the road at dusk.
  • Khuchapi and Khorakert monasteries near the Georgian border can be closed by border troops: check before driving up.
  • Trails between Sanahin and Haghpat cross steep gorges; a leaking water pipe makes one descent slippery.
  • Only one or two ATMs above the town in Sanahin — take cash from Alaverdi.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for the Armenia–Azerbaijan border areas before going east or south of here.
