White River is a village of about 600 on the Trans-Canada Highway, 385 km east of Thunder Bay and 325 km north of Sault Ste Marie. It exists for drivers and rail passengers: the VIA Rail Sudbury–White River train ends here three times a week, Ontario Northland and Kasper buses stop on the Thunder Bay–Sault Ste Marie run, and the fuel station is the only 24-hour pump between Sault Ste Marie and Nipigon. Sights take an hour; the outdoors takes a day.

The village is quiet and safe; the real risks are the drive, the cold and the distance between services. Winter lows near −40 °C, moose and deer on Highway 17 at dusk, and no taxi if you drink.
  • No local taxi and no rideshare: arrange your lift before you arrive.
  • Cell signal is good in the village but drops 5–10 km outside it.
  • Winter lows can reach −40 °C; check road conditions before driving Highway 17.
