NaxosΝάξος

Give Naxos 3–4 nights: beaches at Agios Prokopios and Plaka, one mountain-village day, and the Portara at sunset. Skip it only if you want nightlife over food.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Greece ↗Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Greece ↗Taking stones, pottery or other objects from archaeological sites is illegal; so is exporting antiquities without a permit.
  • Greece ↗Do not photograph military sites or border zones; signs mark them.
  • Greece ↗Acropolis tickets are sold for one-hour entry slots on the official Hellenic Heritage site (hhticket.gr); in peak season slots sell out days ahead, and you cannot enter outside your hour.
  • Greece ↗Businesses must give a receipt (apodeixi) for every sale; ask for one, and do not accept a handwritten note in place of it.

Naxos is the largest Cyclades island and the easiest first island: a working port town, sandy west-coast beaches reachable by bus, and a green mountain interior with marble villages. It takes more visitors than Santorini or Mykonos, so beds and tavernas cost less and the port stays calm. Three nights covers the coast; four adds the villages and Mount Zas.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Local buses run 10 lines from the Chora seafront office; buy a ticket before boarding (about €2). Villages may get only 3 buses a day. Renting a car, quad or scooter opens the interior and the east coast; roads are well maintained but narrow and fast-driven. Chora itself is walkable and partly pedestrianised.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Halki, Filoti and Mount Zas

go

Door to door: Full day by bus; half a day by car

Bus or car to Halki, then Filoti; the Zas trail starts at Aria Spring near Filoti

Vallindras distillery in Halki and the kouros at Melanes are on the way. The Zas climb is 1.5–2.5 h one way.

Apiranthos

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min each way by car

Car or quad over the mountain road; bus possible but slow

Marble alleys and four small museums; combine with the east-coast bays.

Delos and Mykonos

caution

Door to door: About 40 min to Mykonos, then a boat to Delos

Ferry from Naxos port

A long day; Mykonos is better as its own stop.

Koufonisi

overnight

Door to door: About 1–2 h depending on the boat

Small Cyclades ferry from Naxos port

Worth a night or two rather than a rushed return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Chora (Naxos Town)

Port, ferry ticket offices, restaurants and the Castro. Best for one-night stops and car-free evenings.

Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna

5–8 km south of Chora; sandy beach, bus every 30 min in season, family-friendly.

Plaka and Mikri Vigla

Quieter dunes and windsurfing; you need a car, quad or scooter for evenings out.

Halki and Filoti (inland)

Mountain villages for a slow base; 3 buses a day at best, so only with your own transport.

Watch out

Safety

Naxos is a low-crime island and safe for families; the real risks are fast driving on mountain roads, sea urchins and rip currents at exposed beaches, and summer heat on the Zas trail.
  • Meltemi wind in Jul–Aug can cancel ferries and whip up beaches; keep a buffer day before a flight.
  • Summer rain is rare but arrives as a heavy storm that makes marble paths and streets slippery.
  • Mountain roads have blind bends and fast trucks; quads are steadier than scooters.
  • On the east side (Moutsouna, Panermos) the last petrol station is near Filoti — fill up before you cross.
  • Ferry timetables change by season and weather: confirm the day before you travel.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Naxos. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep–early Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (meltemi wind, peak crowds and prices) · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Ferry and flight arrival fixtures for Chora port and JNX, with last-bus times field-checked.
  2. Four walking clusters: port and Chora, the Castro, Portara, and the beach strip south.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and prices (Archaeological Museum, Temple of Dionysus, Eggares olive press) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Meltemi and storm fixtures so gate status can flip to caution.
