Gelibolu is the town on the European shore of the Dardanelles, not the battlefield site. It is a working garrison and ferry port with a walkable harbour, three small museums and a beach strip at Hamzaköy. Most travellers see it in half a day between Istanbul and Çanakkale, or sleep one night before crossing to Lapseki.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: ferry pier to War Museum is 100 m, to the Tractor Museum 200 m, to the Piri Reis Museum a short walk along the harbour. Dolmuş and buses run along the main highway to Bolayır and Güneyli. For Saros Bay coves, Sestos or the battlefields you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

A small, calm garrison town; the real risks are the ferry and highway traffic, summer heat on the exposed beach, and swimming in the Dardanelles, where currents and shipping make it dangerous without a support boat.
  • Do not get off the bus here for the Gallipoli landing sites: they are around Eceabat and Kilitbahir, much further south.
  • Ferry and bus timetables change with the season and with the 1915 bridge traffic; confirm the day before.
  • The Çanakkale 1915 Bridge carries tolls; check the current rate before driving across.
  • Summer afternoons on the exposed beach strip are hot; carry water.
