Eceabat is a small ferry town on the European bank of the Dardanelles, the traditional crossing point to Çanakkale and the closest base to the 1915 Gallipoli landing beaches. The town itself is modern and quiet; the reason to stay is the peninsula — Cape Helles, Anzac Cove, Chunuk Bair and the Turkish memorials are all within a short drive. One full day covers the main sites by car or tour; two nights let you add Kilitbahir and the Kabatepe museum without rushing.

Getting around

You need a car or an organised tour for the battlefields on the west coast; the main highway on the east side has buses but does not reach the sites. Taxis can be hired by the hour from Eceabat. Ferries to Çanakkale run from Eceabat pier and from Kilitbahir.

Safety

Eceabat is a small, safe town; the real risks are Lodos windstorms that cancel ferries, unlit battlefield roads at night, and summer heat with little shade on the sites.
  • Lodos windstorms cancel ferries; check the Gestaş timetable before a crossing day.
  • Battlefield monuments and cemeteries are free and open at all hours; individual museums may charge and keep limited hours.
  • The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge means most intercity buses now bypass Eceabat; you may need to change at Gelibolu or Çanakkale.
  • Fuel up in Eceabat: the peninsula is long and stations are sparse.
