Bragg Creek is a hamlet of about 600 people in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 40 minutes west of Calgary at the junction of Highways 8 and 22. It is the gateway to Kananaskis Country: most people come for a half-day, a picnic at Elbow Falls or a trailhead start, and go back to Calgary the same evening. There is no public transport, so a car is required.

Getting around

A car is the only practical option: no bus or train serves Bragg Creek. Highway 8 (Glenmore Trail) or Highway 22X from Calgary, then Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail). Highway 66 west of the hamlet leads to Elbow Falls and the Kananaskis campgrounds; a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for vehicles in the park.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Alberta hamlet; the real risks are wildlife on trails, winter driving on Highway 66 and patchy cell coverage. Carry bear spray in summer and tell someone your route.
  • No public transport: without a car you cannot reach the hamlet or the falls.
  • A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for vehicles in Kananaskis Country: buy it online before you drive in.
  • Little Elbow campground and parts of Highway 66 close in winter (about Dec 1–May 15): check Alberta Parks before driving west.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 66 and on trails: download maps before you leave.
  • Wildlife (bears, elk) on trails and roads: carry bear spray in summer and keep your distance.
