Leksand sits where Lake Siljan drains into the Österdalälven, in the Siljansbygden district of Dalarna. It is a small town — roughly 6,000 people in the town itself — known for a large rural church, Leksandsbröd crisp bread, a Midsummer party that draws tens of thousands, and an ice-hockey club that has won the Swedish title four times. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day stop between Tällberg and Mora, or as a base for the lake steamers.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Leksand station (resecentrum) is on the Borlänge–Mora regional line; Dalatrafik buses 274 (Tällberg), 102 (Rättvik) and 111 (Borlänge) serve the town. Sommarland and Leksand Strand are about 4 km north — bus, bike or car.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are winter ice on the lake and roads, dark unlit paths in November, and Midsummer crowds around Gropen: stay on marked ground and keep an eye on your group.
  • Midsummer weekend (Sat between 20 and 26 Jun) fills every bed in town: book months ahead or stay in Tällberg or Rättvik.
  • Sommarland opens only from late June to mid-August; outside that window it is closed.
  • Boat cruises on Siljan run in summer only — check sailing days before you plan around one.
  • Regional trains are infrequent in the evening; the last connection back from Borlänge or Mora can be early.
