San Carlos sits where Lake Nicaragua drains into the Río San Juan, in the country's wet south-east. Almost every traveller passes through on the way to El Castillo, the Solentiname Islands or the Costa Rica border at Los Chiles. The malecón and the old fort take half a day; the rest of your time is boats, buses and stocking up before the road ends.

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis cost about C$10 anywhere in town, double at night; there is a local bus but it is not useful for visitors. Boats and buses leave from the pier and the bus terminal near the market.

Safety
- Boat and bus timetables change often: confirm at the ticket office the day before.
- Do not photograph the armed border post on the Río Frío boat to Los Chiles.
- Street money-changers: use a bank or a shop, and count the notes.
- Take a taxi after dark rather than walking long distances.
- Swimming off the malecón is what locals do, but the lake takes untreated sewage: use a piscina instead.
