AugustaAugusta, Georgia
Give Augusta 2 nights: one for the riverfront and museums, one for the canal and a day trip. Skip it in Masters week unless you hold a badge.
Augusta sits on the Savannah River in Georgia's Classic Heartland, about 2.5 hours by car from Atlanta. It kept its 19th-century downtown, and its name travels worldwide through the Masters golf tournament each April. Sights cluster downtown and along the canal, so a car helps but two days covers the core.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Augusta is spread out and buses run limited routes, so a rental car is the practical choice. Downtown Broad Street and the riverwalk are walkable once you park. Taxis and rideshare exist but add up over the city's distances.

Watch out
Safety
- Masters week in early April: hotel rates spike and Washington Road traffic is heavy — book months ahead or avoid the dates.
- Augusta National Golf Club is private and closed to the public; there is no walk-up entry.
- Some blocks east of Lake Olmstead Park and pockets outside downtown are best avoided after dark.
- Summer heat and humidity are real: plan indoor stops midday in July and August.
